Dr. Frank Fisher, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering and co-director of the Institutes Nanotechnology Graduate Program, will receive the Stevens Alumni Association Outstanding Teacher award on September 26th, at the Stevens Athletic Hall of Fame Brunch being held at Stevens during Homecoming 2009.

Professor Fisher also serves as director of Stevens’ Nanomechanics and Nanomaterials Lab, and teaches Modeling and Simulation, Introduction to Nanoscale science and Technology and Techniques of Surface Nanoscale Characterization.

Among his varied technical research interests, Dr. Fisher has focused on important areas of education, including engineering outreach programs for K-12 students. He has received funding from the National Science Foundation, the Army and the Air Force.

“It’s really an honor to be selected for the SAA Outstanding Teacher Award. I think one of the most important aspects of teaching engineering is to prepare my students to be successful practicing engineers after graduation, so it really means a lot to receive this award based on the feedback of recent Stevens graduates” – Dr. Frank Fisher.

The SAA recognition is the most recent in a series of accolades Professor Fisher has received since joining Stevens in 2004. In 2006 he was chosen for the Harvey N. Davis Distinguished Teaching Assistant Professor Award. In addition to the SAA, 2009 has seen Dr. Fisher win the American Society of Engineering Education Ferdinand P. Beer and E. Russell Johnson Jr. Outstanding New Educator Award, as well as the National Science Foundation’s most competitive peer accolade, the Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award for his research, Fundamental Research Leveraging Nanoparticle-Induced Crystallization in Semicrystalline Polymer Nanocomposites.

Professor Fisher has won a number of other teaching awards, including receiving travel funding to participate in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Workshop on Materials Characterization for Nanoscale Reliability in Boulder, CO in 2007, and Searle Center for Teaching Excellence Teaching Assistant Fellow (2000-2001, 2001-2002).
