Stas Tarchalski joins SSE Faculty with 30 years of Systems and Software Engineering Leadership Experience at IBM

Stanislaw Tarchalski will be joining the School of Systems and Enterprises faculty this Fall as an Industry Professor.  He arrives from IBM as a senior executive leader with more than 30 years of global experience in large scale/highly complex program management, systems engineering, system and software development; IT operations management; strategic business planning; new product development; and large scale organizational transformation.  He has experience with successful application of agile, model based techniques within the Government, Aerospace, Automotive, Electronics, Communications and Architecture,  Engineering, and Construction industries. This included directing over 20 Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA)-based projects for government projects valued at over $1 billion.   At IBM as Director of Systems Engineering in the Federal Group, he played a leadership role in annual SOA investment and strategy.  In the IBM Commercial Group, he was the Director Product Life Cycle Management Solutions, and within IBM Corporate Headquarters, he was Director of Worldwide Strategic Market Planning.   He was a key contributor in the 1994 turnound of IBM by leading internal business improvement projects including client-focused breakthrough approaches to innovative product development in the electronics, aerospace, and architecture/construction, and automotive industries.  He began his career as a software engineer within Bell Laboratories and IBM.

He holds an M.S. in Project Management and Systems Engineering from John Hopkins University, a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Rutgers University, and has pursued Executive Education at Harvard University Business School and Stanford University Business School.

Recently at Johns Hopkins University,  Tarchalski brings experience as an educator in graduate level technical management, focused on program management and systems engineering.  He is involved in transforming traditional curricula to include agile methods, model based approaches, technical governance and leadership, and using distance learning and collaborative techniques and technologies. Since arriving recently at Stevens, Tarchalski has become very active in the DoD Systems Engineering Research Center (SERC) operated by Stevens.  “Stas has already shown an ability to innovate and lead,” said Dr. Art Pyster, the Deputy Executive Director of the SERC.  Dr. Pyster went on to say that “Stas is principal investigator on one new research project and is organizing the first SERC research conference.  He brings a wealth of experience and insight in innovative systems engineering approaches, making him an important addition to our research team.”
