Advice You’d Like to Share with the Class of 2013: “College is different than high school in almost every way. The best thing you can do is embrace the change. If you were shy or if you think that making friends will be difficult, join a club and attend as many events as possible. Just walk around your dorm and talk to who you are going to be living with. Leave the door to your room open. Everyone is in the same exact position as you are, so meeting new friends is not as scary as it may seem.”

My Best Study Tip: “The classes are going to be different than what you’re used to, there is no doubt about it. But it’s not something to be afraid of. The best thing I did was use the textbooks I had to pay a lot of money for anyway. Even if you just skim the chapters for important concepts and equations, seeing the information in context and organized really helps. Almost everyone has to take Physics, Calculus and Chemistry. Take advantage of that and work together! It’s a good way to learn the information and a great way to make friends too.”

My Time Management Strategy: “Usually a class gives one or two assignments per week. That means you have more time to complete them, but that also means that they take longer to complete. Doing everything the night before its due isn’t a great idea, unless you want to spend hours doing homework. Usually I aim to finish an assignment two days before it is due. That way, if there is a question I don’t understand or a revision I need to make, there is one more day to do that.”

Resources at Stevens I’ve Used: The library is great when you need a place to do homework and your dorm room is too distracting, which can be often. I have also utilized the tutoring the Academic Support Center offers when I was having trouble with Calculus II.  Over the summer I’m taking advantage of the free classes offered to students in the Scholar’s  Program.

What I Like Best About Stevens:  “I love the fact that everyone’s majors are similar. There is never a loss of people willing to help you understand a subject, give you advice, or complain about a class. Despite the fact that we all share similar academic interests, there is no lack of diversity at Stevens. Every person brings something unique. And if you go to a sports game, attend a student-directed play or watch the annual “Unity” event with skits from our ethnic groups, there is no denying the myriad of talent here. For a small school, Stevens offers so much.”
