Stevens Institute of Technology

Academics

Institutional Profile

Stevens Institute of Technology is a private co-educational institution of higher learning founded in 1870. Stevens is located on a 55-acre campus in Hoboken, New Jersey. It overlooks the Hudson River and has stunning views of the Manhattan skyline of New York City.

At present, Stevens consists of three schools and one college: the Wesley J. Howe School of Technology Management (STM), the Charles V. Schaefer Jr. School of Engineering and Sciences (SES), the School of Systems and Enterprises (SSE) and the College of Arts and Letters (CAL).  All three schools individually offer bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees. The College of Arts and Letters offers a single Bachelor of Arts degree, a double Bachelor of Arts degree and an undergraduate minor. The Institute also offers multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary programs at the graduate level. Stevens also maintains research centers involved in niche areas which support its academic mission.

All of the 2044 undergraduate students are full-time. Of the 519 non-degree and certificate students, 2263 master’s students, and 330 doctoral students, approximately 78% are part-time. Stevens' students come from 85 different countries. Of the undergraduate population, 25% are female, while 35% of the graduate population is female.

The academic duties of the Institute are shared by a variety of personnel. There are 249 faculty, 134 of which are tenured or on tenure track with both teaching and scholarly research responsibilities. There are 115 non-tenure track faculty who are engaged in undergraduate and graduate instruction and/or research.

At the undergraduate level Stevens offers four-year full-time and five-year cooperative educational experiences leading to Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Engineering, and Bachelor of Arts degrees. Undergraduate courses are taught in the traditional classroom mode. In addition, Stevens and New York University offer a joint five-year dual-degree program, consisting of three years in various science programs at NYU and two years in various engineering areas at Stevens.

At the graduate level Stevens offers master’s degrees in science, engineering and technology management on campus, primarily during the evening hours. Stevens also offers off-campus programs at industrial and government sites, and it offers many master’s programs in the online mode through its Web Campus effort. Most of our PhD students study full-time on campus. Interdisciplinary master’s programs and interdisciplinary PhD programs are also available.

University Governance

The legal powers of Stevens Institute of Technology are vested in the Board of Trustees of the Institute. The Chief Administrative Office is that of the President of the Institute, Dr. Harold J. Raveché. The academic authority resides with the Provost and University Vice President, Dr. George Korfiatis who reports to the President. The non-academic administrators directly responsible to the President are Henry Dobbelaar, Vice President for Facilities/Support Services; Frederick E. Regan, Vice President and Chief Advancement Officer; Randy L. Greene, Vice President of Finance and Treasurer; Dr. Maureen Weatherall, Vice President for University Enrollment and Administration, and Dr. Helena S. Wisniewski, Vice President for Enterprise Development. Additionally faculty, staff and students are involved in governance, mainly through membership on institute-wide and school/department committees; most notably, faculty serve on several BOT committees.

Recent Developments

A Strategic Positioning Plan (SPP) was developed with the goal of Stevens being recognized among the top 50 research universities. The Plan was presented and discussed at a Faculty Retreat on August 24, 2006 and subsequently at a Board of Trustees/Faculty Retreat held on October 6, 2006. As part of the strategic planning process, Stevens has reviewed and assessed the existing organizational structure. As a result of this assessment, all segments of the Stevens Community (trustees, faculty and administration) agreed that a seamless implementation of the SPP required the appointment of a Chief Academic Officer. On December 18, 2006, Dr. George Korfiatis was appointed Provost and University Vice President.  Under his direction an assessment of the state of the Institute was undertaken resulting in significant changes in the academic and administrative structure of the Institute as well as governance policies and procedures.
