Bruno to be honored with President’s Leadership award at annual Edwin A. Stevens Gala

Stevens professor will be recognized for his contributions to the Institute and ocean engineering

HOBOKEN , N.J. — The Edwin A. Stevens Society of Stevens Institute of Technology will this year honor Professor Michael Bruno with the President’s Leadership award at its annual Gala.

The President’s Leadership Award is presented to a distinguished individual who has rendered exceptional service to Stevens and for his or her significant achievements and dedication to their field. The recipient will have demonstrated eminent commitment to advancing the students at the Institute through his or her engineering or scientific expertise and achievements. The award is given to an individual who demonstrates, by example, a commitment to advancing Stevens global standing in the edu cational and research community and has personally reached beyond campus to build alliances that raise the public’s appreciation for the resources needed to enhance the mission at Stevens.

Since arriving at Stevens in the summer of 1989, Bruno has distinguished himself as a leader in the field of Coastal and Ocean Engineering, and as a pioneering expert in the expanding field now known as Maritime Systems. As director, first, of the world-renowned Davidson Laboratory, and since 2003 of The Center for Maritime Systems, Bruno has helped create a national awareness of the need for new technologies and methods to support our vital naval and industrial maritime infrastructure. He has communicated forcefully to his peers and colleagues the importance of ensuring the preservation of our waterways and coastlines as resources for future generations, through wise stewardship and visionary dedication.

Bruno holds a Doctor of Science degree in Oceanographic Engineering jointly from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was a 1996 Fulbright Scholar and was a recipient of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Outstanding Service Award.

The Ocean Engineering Graduate Assistance Fund was created in 2006 by friends and colleagues of Dr. Bruno to aid graduate students from the Department of Ocean Engineering who seek professional development opportunities around the world for advancement in their studies. The fund was established in honor of Bruno for his many achievements, dedication to his field and commitment to advancing the student experience at the Institute.

The Fund aims to increase the amount of dollars available to full-time graduate students pursuing a career in Ocean Engineering. It will support important opportunities that are not covered through grants, such as conference fees, travel and training.

About the Edwin A. Stevens Society

Edwin A. Stevens (1795-1869) and his family, well known philanthropists and visionaries of their time, showed their civic responsibility and inventiveness in many ways. They made their most enduring contribution by establishing Stevens Institute of Technology with an initial gift of land and funds to start the school

Honoring the spirit of this generous contribution, graduates of Stevens established the Edwin A. Stevens Society. Members of the society work to provide a solid foundation of financial support for Stevens.

By investing in future generations of Stevens graduates, contributors affirm their deep commitment to providing quality edu cation in engineering, technology and the sciences. Members of the Edwin A. Stevens Society know that Stevens graduates continue to assume key leadership roles in industry, strengthening our nation and our world.

Edwin A. Stevens Society members – a strong network of industry leaders, inventors, businessmen and women, entrepreneurs and edu cators – believe in making solid investments in Stevens for its future.
