HOBOKEN , N.J. — Stevens Institute of Technology's Center for the Performing Art s at DeBaun Auditorium will host the Jersey Swing Jazz Orchestra on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 8:00 p.m. This one-night performance is part of its Music Series.
“Jersey Swing has played for a number of Stevens campus events over the past two years, and their quality and excitement are unparalleled,” said David Zimmerman, the Center’s Executive Director.
The Jersey Swing Jazz Orchestra will bring attendees back to an era when big band jazz was America ’s pop music. Audience members will be able to close their eyes and imagine themselves in a ballroom swaying to the sounds of Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller or tap their toes to the swinging riffs of Count Basie and the soaring trumpet of Harry James. The excitement and glamour these bands delivered on stage in the 1930s and 1940s will be brought to life with swinging songs such as “In The Mood," "Pennsylvania 6-5000," "String of Pearls," "Stardust," "Moonlight Serenade" and "You Made Me Love You."
In addition to the concert, The Center for Performing Art s will also hold a silent auction. Local businesses and artists have donated items and services to the auction, along with tickets to area performing arts events and Broadway shows. “Due to the prior success with swing band concerts and the community’s interest in jazz, we decided this concert would be a great medium for a fundraiser,” Zimmerman said. “We are hoping to bring in $10,000 to balance the deficit in our programming costs so that we may continue to produce quality entertainment at a reasonable price to our patronage.” Refreshments will be served, and the silent auction will continue from 7:00 p.m. until the end of intermission. Prizes will be awarded to highest bidders at the end of the concert.
Tickets for the Jersey Swing Jazz Orchestra are $20 for adults, $15 students and seniors and $10 for children under the age of 12. Discover Jersey Art s members will receive a discounted price of $15 per cardholder when they present their card at the box office. The Dinner and Show Package is $35/person and includes tickets to performance and dinner at Court Street Restaurant & Bar (gratuity and drinks not included.)
