HOBOKEN , N.J. — The Chinese Ministry of Education this month granted accreditation to Stevens Institute of Technology’s Master’s Degree in Management, now being delivered in cooperation with Central University of Finance and Economics (CUFE) in Beijing . CUFE is the principal academic route to top positions at the Ministry of Finance and at China ’s leading banks.
Stevens’ program is one of the first to receive approval since the Chinese ministry suspended accreditation of foreign universities operating in China more than a year ago. Other previously approved Stevens’ programs, operating in China for more than three years, are at Beijing Institute of Technology, one of the nation’s premier engineering schools.
“We are thrilled that China has approved our graduate degrees,” said Robert Ubell, Dean of the School of Professional Education at Stevens and head of the school's China programs. “We can now move forward with more confidence to extend our technical and management programs throughout China .”
At CUFE, Stevens offers a masters degree in management with a concentration in project management to thirty employees of China Development Bank, a key government institution that has financed the Three Georges Dam and construction at the Beijing Olympics. Stevens has been delivering courses to bank employees for about a year.
At CUFE and in other Stevens’ graduate programs in China , one-third of the classes are delivered online from Stevens’ Hoboken campus. Another third is taught by Stevens’ instructors who travel to Beijing and another third is taught by local faculty following Stevens’ curriculum. All classes, whether online or live in Beijing , are conducted in English. Stevens’ CUFE program is the third to be delivered in China . Two others – one in telecom management and another in optics – are at Beijing Institute of Technology.
China Development Bank plays a key role in the fast-paced growth of China ’s infrastructure, building ports, airports, bridges, tunnels, railroads and highways. A unit of China ’s central government, its loans have supported to 4,000 key development projects along the Yellow and Yangtze Rivers as well as revitalization China ’s old industrial base.
Stevens, in collaboration with several notable Chinese schools of higher education, has initiated a number of significant graduate and corporate training programs in China . Degrees earned by students in China are exactly the same as those awarded by Stevens to students in the US . Current programs are at Beijing Institute of Technology and Central University of Finance and Economics. Others—at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications are being developed for delivery next year.
