Stevens’ Heather Dean named NSCAA Academic All-American

Dean is Stevens’ first women’s soccer Academic All-American

HOBOKEN , N.J. — Stevens Institute of Technology junior Heather Dean ( Renton , Wash. )was selected to the 2005 NSCAA/adidas Women College Scholar All-America soccer second-team in the College Division, which features players from NCAA Division II and III and NAIA schools. Dean is Stevens’ first women’s soccer player to earn Academic All-American honors.

“We have always felt that the honor of being named Academic All-America is the highest possible individual award a collegiate athlete can receive,” Coach Jeff Parker said. “It rewards the complete body of work; finding ways to balance a sound mind in a sound body. We have had some outstanding student-athletes that we have considered worthy of the honor, but Heather Dean is the first in our program’s history to be so named. Each member of our program has played a part in her recognition, and we are proud to have Stevens listed as home of some of the nation’s top student-athletes.”

To be eligible for consideration for the team, a player must be at least a junior in academic standing, have no less than a 3.30 cumulative grade point average, start at least 50 percent of the team’s games and be nominated by an NSCAA member coach.

Dean, who boasts a 3.56 GPA as a business and technology major, was also an academic all-region selection this year. A three-time Skyline Conference all-star, she finished her 2005 season as the team’s sixth-leading scorer with 17 points on seven goals and three assists. Dean had a game-high four points on two goals against William Paterson in the Ducks’ 6-0 victory.

In 2004, Dean was the Ducks’ second-leading scorer with 27 points on eight goals and 11 assists. She was also second on the team with four game-winning goals.

In her rookie campaign, Dean made an immediate impact as she ranked second in goals (7) and points (23). She was tied for the team lead with nine assists. Dean was also a three-time Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week selection.

The Ducks finished the 2005 season 20-3 overall and advanced to the sectionals of the NCAA tournament for the first time. Stevens also secured its sixth straight Skyline Conference championship, defeating Manhattanville College 4-0 in the finals.
