Hultin to address NJ Homeland Security Conference, Newark Gateway Hilton, Dec. 9

HOBOKEN, N.J. — Stevens Institute of Technology’s Dean of The Wesley J. Howe School of Technology Management, Jerry MacArthur Hultin, will address the New Jersey Homeland Security Conference at the Newark Gateway Hilton, Newark, N.J., 11:30 a.m., Dec. 9.

Hultin, a former Under Secretary of the US Navy, will be speaking on the topic Combining Profit and Loss Objectives with Smart Security. While this is not an event generally open to the press, Dean Hultin is available for interviews before and after his talk. Please call the News Service contact listed above for details.

Recently, Hultin was the Principal Investigator for a major year-long study of NY-NJ port and harbor security. The report, released via the Internet in September, is titled Securing the Port of New York and New Jersey: Network-centric Operations Applied to the Campaign against Terrorism. The study applied the concept of “network-centric operations,” a strategic concept developed by the US military to increase attack-response and battlefield efficiency, as one pillar of a prescriptive construct to close gaps in security that threaten US commercial ports. The research was funded by a major private foundation and was based in large on two high-level workshops at Stevens that assembled more than 60 leaders from business, government and academia in November 2003 and March 2004.

The report drew wide attention from the press, government agencies and homeland security experts. Hultin subsequently testified before the New Jersey Homeland Security and State Preparedness Committee at the New Jersey State House in Trenton.
