HOBOKEN, N.J. — The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and USA Volleyball (USAV), in conjunction with Molten USA, Inc., announced that Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J., has been selected as the host institution for the 2005 Molten Division III Men’s Invitational Volleyball Championship on April 15-16.
The tournament will be held in the Canavan Arena on the Stevens campus. As the host institution Stevens will receive an automatic berth to the four-team championship. The tournament field will also include a representative from the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) and the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA). The fourth team will be an at-large selection from either the Midwest or West regions.
“Our athletic department has made a tremendous commitment to athletics and men’s volleyball, and is honored to be able to host the most prestigious event in Men’s Division III volleyball,” Stevens’ Head Men’s Volleyball Coach Patrick Dorywalski said. “Our program has taken great strides since last hosting the Molten Men’s Division III Invitational Championships in 2001, and we are looking forward to hosting a great event in 2005.”
Now in its ninth year, the Molten Division III Men’s Invitational Volleyball Championship has grown in scope and stature during its first eight seasons.
The championship was formed due to a need for a culminating event for Division III men’s volleyball. While the NCAA sponsors a national championship for men’s volleyball, programs from all three divisions compete for just four berths in the yearly tournament. In the 34-year history of the men’s tournament, no Division III program has been selected to participate in the NCAA National Collegiate Men’s Volleyball Championship.
The Molten Division III Men’s Invitational Volleyball Championship selection committee consisted of Doug Beal (USA Volleyball); Larry Bock (Juniata College director of athletics/EIVA representative); Bob Newcomb (UC Irvine/at-large representative); Joe Wortmann (University of the Pacific head men’s coach/AVCA men’s representative); Gerry Matacotta (NECVA representative) and Katherine McConnell (AVCA executive director).
Molten USA, Inc. is the “Official Volleyball of the Molten Division III Men’s Invitational Volleyball Championship,” as well as the “Official ball of the AVCA.” Sports Imports is the “Official Net System Supplier of the Molten Division III Men’s Invitational Volleyball Championship.”
