Concorde to pass Stevens on journey to Intrepid Museum

HOBOKEN, N.J. - Tuesday morning, November 25th, will see a historic event unfold when a British Airways Concorde is transported on a barge from Kennedy Airport up the Hudson to its retirement home at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum, located at Pier 86, 46th Street, in New York City.

The Concorde is due to leave the area of the Statue of Liberty at approximately 8 a.m. and arrive at the Intrepid at 9 a.m., with the campus of Stevens Institute of Technology providing a wonderful vantage point to view its passage.

Of particular note is that Stevens is partnering with the Intrepid to help preserve this Concorde. An initiative led by Associate Dean Keith Sheppard of the School of Engineering will provide direct technical support to the Museum in association with the NY Metro Section of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers. This initiative also includes Stevens students. A group of six engineering students has already started work on a conservation plan for the Concorde.

In addition, a student competition will shortly be announced to design a pavilion to house the Concorde.

The retirement of the Concorde fleet after 25 years service marks the end of supersonic passenger transport for the foreseeable future. Press are welcome to witness the last journey of G-BOAD, the holder of the transatlantic record for a passenger aircraft, a record not soon to be challenged.
