Manu Malek, Stevens cybersecurity expert, embarks on South American lecture tour

Dr. Manu Malek, Director of the Certificate in CyberSecurity Program at Stevens Institute of Technology, will embark this month on a two-week lecture tour of three South American nations. The stops will include talks at universities in Brazil, Peru and Uruguay. The tour is sponsored jointly by the Communications Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the respective local IEEE Sections.

Malek will begin his series of presentations August 7 in Lima, Peru at the Ninth International Congress of Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering (INTERCON 2002). Malek's presentation to this prestigious gathering will be on the topic of "Network and Service Management."

Network management is arguably one of the most important challenges faced by the owners and operators of enterprise and service provider networks.

Malek will describe the driving forces and requirements for effective network and service management, review the challenges and technical issues, and identify current research areas. Topics considered will include management of converged networks, distributed management and its platforms, policy-based management, interoperability and scalability issues, security aspects, and applications of intelligent agents.

Malek's next lecture stop will be August 9-10 at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Florianopolis, Brazil. He will lecture on both "Network Management" and "E-Business Security and Information Assurance."

"Information is one of the major assets of any organization or business," says Malek. "Security and information assurance are recognized as critical issues in Information Technology today. I will present some of these issues with an emphasis on their business impacts. I especially focus on the process of protecting information, that is, the inspection, protection, detection, reaction, and reflection aspects. Typical vulnerabilities and attack techniques, and the corresponding safeguards and defenses, will be described."

Malek will make further presentations August 12 in Salvador (Bahia), Brazil, and August 14 in Montevideo, Uruguay.

"Dr. Malek's international profile is another indication of the expertise that is now resident at Stevens," says Dr. Edward A. Stohr, Associate Dean for Research and Academics at Stevens' Howe School of Technology Management. Stohr and Malek are collaborating with others at Stevens to produce a three-day symposium this October on cybersecurity and business protection.

Prior to joining Stevens full-time in 2001, Malek was a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Lucent Technologies Bell Laboratories, and an Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering/Computer Science/Technology Management at Stevens. He has more than 20 years of experience in teaching, practice, and research in communication networks design, optimization, operations, and management. He has held various academic positions in the US and overseas, as well as technical management positions with Bellcore (now Telcordia Technologies) and AT&T Bell Laboratories.

Malek is the author, co-author, or editor of six books, co-holder of two patents, and the author or co-author of over fifty published technical papers and numerous internal technical reports in the areas of network design, computer communications, and network operations and management.

He is a fellow of the IEEE, an IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Lecturer, and the founder and Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Network and Systems Management. He earned his doctorate in electrical engineering/computer science from the University of California, Berkeley.
