Stevens seniors' "eVents" electronic bulletin board system declared "Most Marketable Project" in RIT contest

Students from Stevens Institute of Technology won high recognition May 12 for their senior design project at the Second Annual Student Design Contest in Rochester, N.Y. The competition is sponsored by the student chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where the event took place.

The Stevens team's eVents News and Events System was awarded the title of "Most Marketable Project" by the judges at the competition. The five-member team was up against 13 separate teams from four schools in the competition.

"I believe we got recognized as 'Most Marketable,'" says Stevens team member Abiy Yacob, "because students and judges saw the innovative solution provided by the eVents System."

The system is driven by a robust communicating software that allows various subscribers on the Stevens campus to reach the larger community with news and campus events announcements. The system is displayed from wall- and countertop-mounted flat panel screens at key locations. It is also available to students and faculty online (events.stevens.edu) to keep in touch with Stevens events when away from the campus.

Students, faculty and other subscribers can submit news and events information, which is then screened by multiple administrators and fed into the system for instant viewing. Submissions can be made on a 24/7 basis.

The events are presented in a graphically pleasing "slideshow" that allows for a quick grasp of information as members of the Stevens community travel about the campus.

The student team members are Theodore Stevens, Jr., main programmer and project leader; Abiy Yacob, marketing and school relations; Steven Aiello and Antonio R. Udina, system networking; and Samuel Jan, server and graphics. Their Stevens advisors on the project were Dr. Fred Bruno, Distinguished Service Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Richard Widdicombe, Director of the Samuel C. Williams Library.

The team hopes to explore commercialization of the project, beginning with projected expansion of the system on the Stevens campus.
