The Lyric Orchestra presents all-Mendelssohn concert Dec. 2
The Lyric Orchestra will present an all-Mendelssohn program for its second concert this season at Stevens Institute of Technology's award-winning DeBaun Auditorium. The concert, which recognizes World AIDS Day, is set for 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at DeBaun Auditorium, Hudson and 5th streets in Hoboken, N.J.

Maestro Franco Bertacci, conductor of the orchestra, says he selected the Mendelssohn program especially for the Lyric's concert marking World AIDS Day:
"I chose this composer for the beauty of his music and as a poignant reminder that many lives cut short by early death - Mendelssohn died at 38 - have given the world some of its greatest art.
"Felix Mendelssohn was one of the best-loved composers of the 19th century and probably the most successful musician of that century," says Bertacci. "The music he composed is so beautiful, so magical, that it belies the frantic pace of his amazing and productive life."
The concert program will include the Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 56 "Scottish," the Wedding March from "A Midsummer Night's Dream," and the Concerto in E minor for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 64, featuring the orchestra's Concertmaster, Georgy Valtchev.
Valtchev, one of the most prominent Bulgarian violinists of his generation, won first prize at the 1999 Ducrest International Competition. A graduate of The Julliard School of Music, he has been a soloist at the prestigious Aspen Music Festival, among his many achievements.
The 45-member Lyric Orchestra, based in Hoboken, brings together extraordinarily talented young musicians (average age 25) from more than a dozen countries. Its players, selected by audition, include an impressive variety of top students and recent graduates from The Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music living in and around Manhattan.
Stevens' DeBaun Auditorium, the recent winner of a statewide award for historic preservation, is easily reached by public transportation. The auditorium is about six blocks from Hoboken's historic transit terminal, with service from New York and New Jersey.
Also, free parking is available for concert-goers at Sixth and River Streets on Stevens' campus, one block northeast of the auditorium.
The Dec. 2 concert is being supported by Roche Diagnostics, Agouron Pharmaceuticals, Bristol-Meyers Squibb, Alza Pharmaceuticals, and Merck and Co.
