The Lyric Orchestra will open its regular concert season at Stevens Institute of Technology's award-winning DeBaun Auditorium at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, with a special concert to benefit cancer research and service in New Jersey. Hoboken Mayor Anthony Russo, who is himself recovering from cancer, will guest conduct a portion of the concert.
The mayor, a former smoker who has undergone several treatments for cancer, today works with organizations such as the American Cancer Society to discourage young people from smoking. "I'm pleased to have this opportunity to be involved with this excellent orchestra based in Hoboken, especially for such an important cause," he says.
The 45-member Lyric Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Franco Bertacci, brings together extraordinarily talented young musicians (average age 25) from more than a dozen countries. Its players, selected by audition, include an impressive variety of top students and recent graduates from The Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music living in and around Manhattan. The Oct. 21 concert marks the opening of the orchestra's third consecutive season at Stevens' historic DeBaun Auditorium.
The program will include the following selections: Tchaikovsky, Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor for Piano and Orchestra, Lora Tchekoratova, pianist; Liszt, Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2; Beethoven, "Ah Perfido!", Lisa Layman, soprano; Beethoven, Coriolan Overture, Op. 62; Mozart, Per questa bella man, K.612, Zachary Smith, contrabass solo, and Adrian Sans, baritone.
Stevens' DeBaun Auditorium, the recent winner of a statewide award for historic preservation, is easily reached by public transportation. The auditorium is at Hudson and 5th streets in Hoboken, N.J., about six blocks from Hoboken's historic transit terminal, with service from New York and New Jersey.
