Stevens hosts summer leadership training program for e-commerce and women entrepreneurs

HOBOKEN, N.J. - In today's Internet marketplace, a large and growing proportion of high-impact managers and business-owners are women, a trend Stevens Institute of Technology salutes and supports through a variety of educational opportunities.

On Wednesday, July 19th, Stevens will host an all-day leadership training program in e-commerce with a special emphasis on recruiting women interested in the field, particularly those involved with starting their own businesses. Although the program is filled, media are welcome to attend and conduct interviews (please see the end of this release for details).

In America, nearly 50 percent of computer science degrees now are granted to women - a fact predicted by social forecasters John Naisbitt and Patricia Aburdene in their book Megatrends 2000, published in 1990. During the 1990s women have been starting their own businesses at rates exceeding those of men. These trends continue and are accelerating.

"Business on the Internet", the morning session at Stevens July 19th, deals with leveraging the power of the Internet as a mass medium. After learning about past Internet trends, future projections and present revenue strategies, the class will review successful business models and identify methods of leveraging the Web to conduct business.

After lunch, a session on "Internet Marketing" will cover topics for those serious about selling online. This class targets people who want to know more about Intranets and Extranets, how to attract visitors to a Web site and keep them coming back, and how to link information gained from a Web site into a database. Attendees will not only be exposed to advertising and marketing on the Web but also learn ways to secure orders and collect payment online. Both men and women have enrolled in the sessions.

Cooperating with Stevens is a coalition of groups including the Union County Economic Development Corporation, the Scranton (Pa.) Electronic Commerce Resource Center, the Newark office of the Department of Commerce and the New Jersey chapter of the Association of Women Business Owners.

A second leadership training session is planned at Stevens Aug. 17. In it, participants will be taught elementary and advanced Web page development for e-commerce.

Media are invited to attend the event on July 19th, which will be held in the Fielding Room, 3rd floor, Wesley J. Howe Center (Stevens' main administration building), centrally located on campus about one block east of 8th Street and Castle Point Terrace (enter at 9th Street). Interviews with participants and presenters are possible at the midmorning break (10:30 a.m.), during the noon lunch break and when the sessions close at 3:30 p.m.
