Stevens hosts seminar on emergency operations centers

Event discussed a number of emergency preparedness initiatives

HOBOKEN , N.J. – Citing the importance of preparedness in the face of disaster , the Center for Secure and Resilient Maritime Commerce (CSR) at Stevens Institute of Technology recently hosted a workshop on emergency operations centers.

The June 10 event examined commonalities and gaps that exist among centers at the federal, state, and county levels, as well as the public and private sectors and their impact on Maritime and Port Resilience, said Dr. Hady R. Salloum, Director of Maritime Security Technology Applications at Stevens.

“As we move toward a unified approach to dealing with threats, whether caused by natural disasters or man-made, the workshop looked at ways to enhance our ability to efficiently use the various emergency operations centers and improve their operations, functions, and processes,” said Salloum. “This workshop provided an opportunity to discuss areas that have worked in the past and areas that need improvement, while sharing experiences and lessons learned among participants.”

Many federal, state, public, and private organizations have their own emergency operations centers to ensure business continuity in case of an emergency.

Even though emergencies may be specific to each organization, many of them are similar in nature and more importantly the functions, processes and operating the centers are similar and even identical at some level.

The day-long event featured presentations from the New Jersey State Police, the United States Army, PSE&G, the United States Coast Guard the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness and the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.
