New Jersey's 2009 Annual State of the Shore report, May 19

HOBOKEN, N.J. – On Tuesday, May 19, 2009, Dr. Jon Miller of Stevens Institute of Technology and the Coastal Process Specialist for the NJMSC/NJ Sea Grant Program will present the 7th annual State of the Shore report on the condition of NJ beaches, as we kick off the peak Jersey Shore tourism season. Speakers will include Acting NJDEP Commissioner Mark Mauriello, Secretary of Agriculture Douglas Fisher and Secretary of State Nina Mitchell Wells.

The 2009 NJ: The State of the Shore Media Event will once again offer two additional newsworthy announcements: the winners of the 2009 NJ Top Ten Beaches Survey and this year’s recipients of the Stew Tweed Fisheries and Aquaculture Scholarships.

Members of the media will have an opportunity to interview the speakers, beach survey award winners and scholarship recipients. The event will also provide the media and guests with an opportunity to network with develop future sources for information about specific marine and coastal topics.

The press event, sponsored by the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium/NJ Sea Grant and Stevens Institute of Technology, will take place at The Sea Gulls’ Nest, Parking Area D in Sandy Hook, N.J. Copies of the NJMSC Annual 2009 State of the Shore Report will be available as well as coastal press kits containing publications and resource materials developed specifically for the event.

Please allow for extra travel time as you may experience significant traffic delays on Route 36 due to ongoing construction at the Highlands Bridge, which provides access to the entrance of Sandy Hook.

From New York (traveling South): Take the NJ Turnpike to Exit 11 (shore points) and then take Garden State Parkway South to Exit 117 (follow signs for Sandy Hook).

Bear left to Route 36 (Do NOT take Route 35!) Stay on 36 for 15 miles (about 25 minutes). You will see the ocean and what’s left of the Highlands Bridge, currently under construction. As you go over the Highlands bridge bear left and follow sign onto Sandy Hook.

After you pass thru entrance toll plaza, continue two miles to Area D: It is the third parking lot on your right after you enter the park. It is a large parking lot with a large two-story structure. Sea Gulls’ Nest is atop the two-story structure.

Traveling North on Garden State Parkway (coming from South of Exit 105 on Parkway): Take Parkway North to Exit 105 (Eatontown). Take Route 36 East for five miles to Ocean Blvd. (One block west of the Ocean) Turn left (north) on Ocean Blvd. and continue for 10 miles. As you near the Highlands Bridge construction zone, stay straight and follow sign onto Sandy Hook. After you pass entrance toll plaza, continue two miles to Area D: It is the third parking lot on your right after you enter the park. It is a large parking lot with a large two-story structure. Sea Gulls’ Nest is atop the two-story structure.

From Points West of the Ocean: Take Route 18 South and exit at Eatontown/Route 36. Follow directions above under “B”.

OR: Take Route 520 East all the way thru Rumson and over the Sea Bright/Rumson Bridge.

After bridge, turn left onto Ocean Avenue and head north for two miles. At you near bridge in Highlands, stay straight and follow the sign onto Sandy Hook.
