Stevens is recognized for its Hispanic American physics graduates

American Institute of Physics lists Stevens among universities with high percentage of Hispanic Americans earning a doctoral degree

HOBOKEN, N.J. – - Stevens Institute of Technology has been recognized by the American Institute of Physics’ Statistical Research Center for its high percentage of Hispanic Americans graduating with a doctorate in Physics. This award was bestowed on Stevens based on surveys and research submitted to the university throughout recent years.

Beginning in high school, Hispanic students’ interest in physics has been shown to diminish. Stevens uses techniques that have been acknowledged by the SRC to change opinions of many of these students. School recruitment, demonstrative pre-college programs and location (New York Metropolitan area) are attractive benefits that attract minorities back to science and technology studies.

Undergraduate courses offer cultural studies that are intriguing supplements for undergrads. The cultural courses introduce ideas beyond the students’ focus of studies and help integrate life issues with a technical discipline. They introduce a routine to combine culture and career goals. Participating in a broad-based curriculum enables Hispanic students to achieve a higher level of success within their chosen fields.

Understanding that a diverse student body strengthens the entire university, Stevens plans to expand its efforts to attract minorities into the world of physical sciences. This commitment reflects Stevens’ emphasis on a well-rounded student body, as the university encourages students to develop beyond their technical skills.

In addition to Stevens, the other universities on the list are Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New Mexico State University , Stanford University , University of California at Berkley , University of California at Davis , University of California at Los Angeles , University of Florida , University of Minnesota at Minneapolis , University of Nebraska , University of Pennsylvania and the University of Texas at Austin .
