HOBOKEN, N.J. ― Professor Christine Bullen, president of The Global Sourcing Council (GSC) and a faculty member at The Howe School of Technology Management, Stevens Institute of Technology, has announced the next meeting of the GSC, “Globalization and Sustainable Development in the Information Age.” The event will take place on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, start-time 4:00 p.m., at The Philippine Center, 556 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY.
This event follows the very successful inaugural meeting of the Council in November 2007 and is the first of four events planned for 2008.
The keynote speaker is Sarbuland Khan, the Executive Coordinator for the UN Global Alliance for ICT and Development (UN G@ID). G@ID is a partnership and network supported by the United Nations, which is actively pursuing the goal of a better, more peaceful world through the use of information and communication technology (ICT) as an instrument for overcoming poverty. Khan will speak about how G@ID is working to bring the 4.5 billion people living in poverty into the global economy by supporting the free flow of goods around the world.
“Information and communication technology provides a mechanism for accomplishing this goal in a sustainable way through the advantages it brings and the potential it creates for all groups in society,” said Bullen.
In addition, there will be a special speaker for the second half of the program, Steve Kloeblen, Vice President, IBM. The IBM World Development Initiative, which is being led by Kloeblen, is focused on finding business opportunities for IBM in meeting the needs of people at the “base of the socioeconomic pyramid.” He will discuss how this initiative supports the IBM corporate value by focusing on innovation that matters for the world. Kloeblen will describe how this initiative has been implemented within IBM and discuss some vignettes of IBMers who have built networks reaching around the globe to countries such as India, China and Kenya.
Also during the event, the first GSC Leadership Awards will be presented. The GSC Leadership Award recognizes exceptional achievement in the global sourcing marketplace, exhibiting a combination of positive social and economic leadership. The award will be made to individuals or organizations demonstrating any of the following:
