HOBOKEN, N.J. ― Stevens will celebrate its first annual Research and Entrepreneurship Day this semester. This daylong celebration of science and technology innovation is scheduled for April 30, 2008 on the Stevens Campus.
The primary goal of the Research and Entrepreneurship Day is to highlight the current research and entrepreneurship programs focusing on Technogenesis ®, Stevens’ pioneering educational concept of bringing together faculty, students, and industry to nurture research concepts from laboratory innovation to commercialization and back to the classroom.
Research Day with will feature keynote speeches, poster sessions, panel discussions and tours of research centers on the Stevens campus.
This year’s event will feature Dr. Patricia L. Gruber, the Director of Research at the Office of Naval Research, as the primary keynote speaker; and Mr. Timothy Lizura, Senior Vice President of the NJ Economic Development Authority, will highlight the role of entrepreneurship in Academia.
Stevens’ research clusters in three areas will be highlighted:
Systems and enterprise management and architecture
This strategic research thrust at Stevens addresses questions that are related to the nature of sociotechnologic systems within the context of global competitiveness in their process to create economic value. Research efforts are focused to create unique knowledge about the functionality of socioeconomic systems. This knowledge represents the base for innovative educational initiatives at Stevens. The focus is on developing practical methods, tools, heuristics that leaders can apply to increase the productivity of sociotechnical systems and to improve their economic value.
Security – maritime, cyber, information and communication networks
Recent events around the globe have once again brought security into the limelight. Protecting our geographical borders, critical infrastructure , and vital communication and trade networks is crucial in defending against man-made and natural threats. In response to these emerging threats, Stevens Institute of Technology has established cross-disciplinary research areas focused on developing transitional breakthroughs in national security technology. The Maritime Security Laboratory, established in partnership with the US Navy, focuses on addressing emerging maritime threats, while researchers in the departments of Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Physics work on various topics in cybersecurity.
Multi-scale engineering, science and technology, with a focus on nano-and micro-scale systems and devices
The Multiscale Science, Engineering, and Technology research thrust at Stevens seeks to establish the knowledge base necessary to develop and implement nanotechnology-enabled solutions spanning a broad spectrum of engineering and science disciplines. Rooted in nanoscale science yet focused on real-world problems, these emerging technologies will have transformative value in areas of national and global interest including energy, health, electronics, communications, the environment, and national security.
The unique Stevens approach to entrepreneurship has led to the formation of several spin-off companies in the areas of environmental, medical, security and sensing technology. Current portfolio of spin-off companies include SPOC, Inc, a pain management system; Attila Technologies , LLC an intelligent multi network radio/ router; InStream Media, LLC an embedded interactive digital advertising system; and Predator Vision LLC a multi spectral security camera that combines thermal sensitivity and digital resolution. Two environmental spin-offs, namely, Hydroglobe and PlasmaSol have successfully commercialized an arsenic adsorbent and a disinfection technology, respectively.
