Chinese students earn Stevens master’s degrees in Beijing

Ceremony at Beijing Institute of Technology awards 120th graduate degree

HOBOKEN , N.J. -- In its fourth graduate ceremony in Beijing , nearly 40 Stevens Institute of Technology students earned advanced degrees at the university's award-winning Beijing program this month.

Modeled directly after the school's graduate exercises in Hoboken , N.J. , Beijing students in black caps and gowns marched to Pomp and Circumstance and sang the school's alma mater at the close of the ceremony. With this month's graduation, more than 140 students have either earned Stevens' degrees or are presently enrolled at the university's programs in China .

“Our Beijing students earn exactly the same degree as those who study in Hoboken ,” remarked Maureen Weatherall, Vice President for University Enrollment and Administration at Stevens. Weatherall conferred diplomas on the stage at Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), one of Stevens' partner schools in China . “Most have never been to the US , but their diplomas are no different from those of our students in New Jersey .”

Stevens’ program at BIT, one of China 's top engineering schools, offers master's degrees in Photonics and Microelectronics and Telecommunications Management. Central University of Finance and Economics (CUFE), Stevens’ other partner school in China , confers graduate degrees in Project Management. CUFE is the nation's key financial services school. Other programs at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications are either waiting for approval from China 's Ministry of Education or are under negotiation.

Last spring, the Sloan Foundation awarded Stevens’ China graduate edu cation the prize as the “best online teaching and learning program.”

One-third of the courses are delivered in Beijing by Stevens faculty in accelerated instruction. Another third are taught online from Hoboken by Stevens faculty and a final third are presented in Beijing by Stevens’ partner school faculty. All courses are presented in English.
