Thomas Herald named Lockheed Martin Fellow

Stevens alumnus is one of only a few hundred Fellows at the aeronautics and defense company

HOBOKEN, N.J. ― Dr. Thomas E. Herald, Jr., an alumnus of Stevens Institute of Technology, was recently selected as a Lockheed Martin Fellow. He is one of only a few hundred such Fellows within the aeronautics and defense company of 140,000 employees worldwide. Herald has been employed by Lockheed Martin heritage companies for more than 25 years.

The Lockheed Martin Fellows program is a company-wide program that recognizes, honors and rewards superlative world-class engineers, scientists and technologists. Selection as a Lockheed Martin Fellow is a recognition of the highest levels of technical achievement and continuing contributions to the company.

The criteria by which Herald was assessed and awarded the Fellows title included technical expertise, intellectual capital, technical and interpersonal leadership, team skills and outside service to the technical community. He will carry the title for three years.

Herald received his doctorate in Systems Engineering in May 2007 from the School of Systems and Enterprises at Stevens. In 2003 he was the recipient of the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) Foundation/Stevens Institute Doctoral Research Award for his outstanding and promising research in the area of Systems Engineering and Supportability. In 2007, his dissertation, “ An Obsolescence Forecasting Methodology for Strategic Systems Sustainment Decision Making,” was chosen for publication by the School of Systems and Enterprises Press and awarded as Outstanding Dissertation of 2007. Herald’s dissertation will be published and available in hardcopy in spring 2008.

“We are proud to have Dr. Herald as an industry fellow within our school. He has been a strong contributor to our research agenda while also being a regular instructor in some of our core courses. This recognition of Dr. Herald by Lockheed Martin is so very richly deserved,” said Dinesh Verma, Dean of Stevens’ School of Systems and Enterprises.

Herald received his master’s degree in Electrical Engineering in 1986 from the University of Maryland and his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering in 1982 from the University of Pittsburgh .
