Stevens’ Engineering Our Future NJ program meets 1,000-teacher mark

HOBOKEN , N.J. — The Center for Innovation in Engineering and Science Education (CIESE) at Stevens Institute of Technology has provided professional development and curricular programming to 1,000 New Jersey educators, as part of its statewide program,Engineering Our Future NJ (EOFNJ). Through this initiative, CIESE and its partners aim to strengthen the N.J. Core Curriculum Content Standards to ensure that all elementary, middle and high school students in New Jersey experience engineering, with a focus on innovation, as an integral, core component of their K-12 education.

With support from Verizon Communications, the National Science Foundation, Honeywell, the State of New Jersey and other sources, CIESE has provided professional development to 1,000 K-12 teachers and administrators from 250 school districts and related organizations in all of New Jersey’s 21 counties since EOFNJ was launched in 2005. Through partnerships with school districts, other institutions of higher edu cation and associated engineering, technology, science and research organizations, CIESE has achieved the halfway mark of its near-term goal, to train 2,000 edu cators to effectively integrate engineering curricula into their classrooms and schools.

“The 1,000-teacher milestone is significant because it demonstrates that teachers, administrators and other school stakeholders are buying in to the importance of preparing the next generation with knowledge about the human-designed world, as well as the critical need to cultivate problem-solving, innovation and creativity in our students,” said Beth McGrath , CIESE Director.

The aim of the teacher professional development programs is to provide teachers with a thorough understanding of selected, exemplary engineering curricula and underlying science and engineering concepts through a hands-on experience that will result in effective classroom implementation.

“The science of engineering and the critical thinking skills it helps develop will play an important role in providing students with the tools they will need to excel in the workplace of tomorrow,” said Patrick Gaston, Verizon Foundation president. “Programs such as Engineering Our Future New Jersey ensure that students will have early exposure to engineering and provide them with a strong base to succeed as they advance through their academic career.”

Engineering Our Future New Jersey is funded in part by a leadership grant of $500,000 from the Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon.

The curricular approach is to both infuse engineering into science and mathematics curricula where alignments with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standard allow, and to promote engineering and technology as standalone curricula where such implementation is possible. CIESE provides professional development for teachers, curriculum planning, and other types of technical assistance in the following exemplary engineering curricula:

Engineering is Elementary (EiE) is a modular engineering curriculum developed by the Museum of Science , Boston . Each EiE module integrates an elementary-level science topic with a specific field of engineering and introduces students to the engineering design process.

A World in Motion (AWIM), developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers Foundation, brings math and science principles to life in the context of an engineering design challenge for middle school students through highly interactive and innovative learning experiences that incorporate the laws of physics, motion, flight, and electronics.

Engineering the Future (ETF), developed by the Museum of Science , Boston , is a full-year engineering and technology edu cation course suitable for Grade 9-12 students. Through four projects, students learn about engineering design, manufacturing, communication and energy systems.

New CIESE Engineering Lessons supplement existing award-winning CIESE interdisciplanary telecollaborative and real-time data science curricula. The new engineering design challenges span various science content areas, including earth science, physical science, and life science.

New Building Math is a modular curriculum developed by the Museum of Science , Boston for grades 6-8 mathematics studies that integrates math concepts, algebraic reasoning and engineering through an engineering design challenge in a realistic story context.

New Pro/ENGINEER Schools Edition, developed by Parametric Technology Corporation,is an engineering computer-aided design (CAD) tool, for grades 6-12, with fully associative capabilities spanning modeling, assemblies, drawings, animations, kinematic analysis, design optimation, renderings and more.

Professional development takes place in a variety of venues, at Stevens, and in partnership with other institutions in other locations such as The College of New Jersey, Liberty Science Center , Brookdale Community College and many more. Thanks to the Verizon grant, workshops are offered at no cost or at a nominal fee to cover the cost of hospitality and materials.
