Veteran Astronaut Nancy Currie to speak at Stevens

NASA Johnson Space Center ’s Deputy Director Engineering Directorate to discuss the value of Systems Engineering in NASA’s Future

HOBOKEN, N.J. — Coinciding with the launching of the new graduate program in Space Systems Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology, veteran astronaut Dr. Nancy Currie will speak on the value of Systems Engineering and the impact it will have on NASA’s future.

The talk will take place on Tuesday, November 13, 2007, 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., at The Babbio Center, Room 122, located at 6th and River Streets on the Stevens campus in Hoboken, NJ. A wine and cheese reception in Dr. Currie’s honor will follow in the Babbio Center ’s Atrium. Limited seating is available.

Dr. Nancy Currie is a veteran of four space missions; she was selected as an astronaut in 1990 and has accrued 1,000 hours in space. She flew as a mission specialist 2, flight engineer, on STS-57 (1993), STS-70 (1995), STS-88, the first International Space Station assembly mission (1998), and STS-109 (2002).

Following the Columbia tragedy in 2003, she was selected to lead the Space Shuttle Program’s Safety and Mission Assurance Office. She served in the United States Army for 24 years and achieved the rank of Colonel prior to her retirement in May 2005.

She holds a bachelor’s degree with honors in biological science from Ohio State University, a master’s degree in safety engineering from the University of Southern California, and a doctorate in industrial engineering from the University of Houston. In addition to serving as Deputy Director Engineering Directorate, she also serves as Dean of the Engineering Academy at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX .
