New Student Service Center brings it all together

HOBOKEN, N.J. — For students at Stevens Institute of Technology this fall, navigating through those first-of-the-semester tasks — registering for classes, taking care of financial aid and paying tuition — has become easier and more high-tech.

Stevens now has a new Student Service Center that puts the institute’s financial aid, registrar and student financial services offices all in one convenient location. And with its attractive wood and brushed steel surroundings, the new center looks as high-tech as the services it offers. Located on the first floor of Wesley J. Howe Center, Stevens’ main administration building, the Student Service Center also offers a spectacular view of the Manhattan skyline and Hudson River.

But there’s more: Some Stevens students do not even need to step foot in the new center. This fall, for the first time, students who choose to register online and pay by credit card may take care of all of their business from a distance.

Those who do visit the Student Service Center will find newly trained staff who are more helpful than ever before. According to Maureen Weatherall, vice president for enrollment management at Stevens, all of the staff who work in the center have been cross-trained. For students that means that most questions can be answered by anyone in the center — there’s no more tracking down the right person in separate departments for each question. That saves time and gives students better service, says Weatherall.

Plans for the new center started about a year ago, and construction was completed this summer, with designs by Montalto Massa Architects, PC, of Edison, N.J. In the hallway outside the center, new electronic kiosks with touch-screen technology allow students to view information such as class schedules and financial aid status.

Note to reporters: For a tour of the new Student Service Center, contact Cass Bruton-Ward (see above) or Eric Rosenberg, Director of Information Services, at (201) 216-5491.
