Stevens presents forum on "Some Answers To Meaningless Post Modern Questions" on February 17

Stevens Institute of Technology will present a forum on "Some Answers To Meaningless Post Modern Questions," Feb. 17, at 1:00 p.m., in the Castle Room on the third floor of the Wesley J. Howe Center on the university’s Hoboken campus.

The lecture, part of the Department of Humanities and Social Services’ ongoing Humanities Forum series, will be given by Stephen Bloom, head of the Department of Computer Science.

It had been alleged that no one theory of the physical world is necessarily better than alternatives; that theories are linguistic conventions; that are no "objective facts;" that current physical theories are sexist; there is no such thing as a world independent of our minds; and that science can represent as its is.

Bloom notes that many people might not know what these claims mean, let alone know if they are true. However, he will discuss an analogy in mathematics, where the meaning is precise and where one can prove that one’s answers are correct.
