The Institute takes pride in its distinctive learning environment of Technogenesis, wherein its students, faculty and external partners jointly nurture new technologies from research results to market realization.  Technogenesis is more than technology transfer; it is part of the Institute’s educational experience and creates a climate of innovation and enterprise across the campus.  To achieve that goal, the protection of and assertion of rights to intellectual property generated by Institute faculty and academic staff members are critical.  Results include the generation of royalty income from successfully licensed inventions and the development and sale of start-up companies.

The Office of University Research and Enterprise Development (URED) oversees the Technogenesis process and has primary responsibility for the Institute’s intellectual property policies and procedures.  OSR and URED work together closely regarding intellectual property issues generated by the external sponsorship of research projects.

All members of the faculty and other academic staff are required to sign an Invention and Patent Agreement, which is then filed with URED.  With advice from outside intellectual property counsel, URED coordinates teaming and non-disclosure agreement institutional review and signature, participates with OSR in developing intellectual property language for sponsored research awards, administers the invention disclosure and patent filing procedures of the Institute, and assists investigators and OSR in filing required reports to sponsors.

The Bayh-Dole Act of 1980, as amended, provides the basis for current technology transfer practices at U.S. universities, since that statute allows universities to elect to retain title to inventions developed through governmental funding.  URED and OSR pursue intellectual property protection for inventions generated under all sponsored projects within the context of the supportive structure spawned by the Bayh-Dole Act.

Investigators should contact URED regarding any general policy or procedural issues related to intellectual property; OSR staff will provide assistance on matters related to sponsored agreements.
