Statement from the Provost

A Statement from the Provost - Dr. George Korfiatis

It is the Policy of the Public Health Service (PHS) to require institutions to establish and maintain proper measures to ensure the appropriate care and use of all animals involved in research, research training, and biological testing activities (hereinafter referred to as activities) conducted or supported by the PHS.  The PHS and this university endorse the "U.S. Government Principles for the Utilization and Care of Vertebrate Animals Used in Testing, Research, and Training" developed by the Interagency Research Animal Committee.

The Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), a function reporting to PHS, oversees the care and use of animals involved in research that is funded by any PHS agency such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), among others.  OLAW negotiates Assurances of Compliance with organizations that require the humane treatment of animals used in research.  Stevens maintains an approved OLAW Assurance and fully supports the PHS mission and objective.

Questions regarding research at Stevens may be directed to Barbara DeHaven, the Executive Director of Sponsored Research at 201.216.8762 or bdehaven@stevens.edu.
