Human Subjects and IRB: Statement

A Statement from the Provost - Dr. George Korfiatis

It is the Policy of the Public Health Service (PHS) to require institutions to establish and maintain proper measures to ensure the appropriate care and use of all humans  involved in research, research training, and biological testing activities (hereinafter referred to as activities) conducted or supported by the PHS. The PHS and this university endorse the foundation principles of ethical human subjects’ research as elaborated in the Belmont Report and Nuremburg Code.

The Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP), a function reporting to PHS provides leadership in the protection of the rights, welfare, and wellbeing of subjects involved in research conducted or supported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  OHRP negotiates Assurances of Compliance with organizations that engage in human subjects’ research.  Stevens maintains an approved OHRP Assurance and fully supports the PHS mission and objective.

Questions regarding research at Stevens may be directed to Barbara DeHaven, the Executive Director of Sponsored Programs at 201.216.8762 or bdehaven@stevens.edu or David Schultz, the Director of Research Data, Audit and Compliance (RDAC) at 201.216.5371 or dschult2@stevens.edu
