DeBaun Center for Performing Arts, in conjunction with Theta Alpha Phi, is proud to present Smokey Joe’s Café—The Songs of Leiber and Stoller as the second production of the 2013-2014 Theater Series.  Smokey Joe’s Café will run for one weekend on October 4 & 5, 2013 at 8 p.m. in DeBaun Auditorium, Edwin A. Stevens Hall, 24 5th Street (corner of Hudson Street), in Hoboken, NJ

Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, as much as anyone, virtually invented rock ‘n’ roll, and now their songs provide the basis for an electrifying entertainment that illuminates a golden age of American culture.  In an idealized setting, the classic theme of love won, lost and imagined blend with hilarious set-pieces and slice-of-life emotions.  Featuring nearly 40 of the greatest songs ever recorded, Smokey Joe’s Café isn’t just great pop music—it’s compelling musical theatre.  This production will feature Stevens alumni, students, and staff performing songs like “Jailhouse Rock,” “Charlie Brown,” “On Broadway,” “Love Potion #9,” and “Stand by Me” in front of a live band comprised of Stevens students and alumni.  This production is directed by David Zimmerman '90, choreographed by Katherina Gaccione '10 '11, musical directed by Joel Condon '10 and production managed by Giovanni Gaccione '09 '11.

Theta Alpha Phi (TAP) is Stevens’ National Theater Honors Fraternity which celebrated its 50th anniversary in Fall 2010.  The Stevens Alpha Chapter is the first chapter of TAP in New Jersey and the only chapter at a technical institute.  Smokey Joe’s Café marks the second full production fully produced by TAP since its inception over 50 years ago.

“It’s always such a joy to come back to Stevens and work with such amazing people,” says Giovanni Gaccione, producer and former TAP president. “The dedication of alumni, staff, and current students have come together to truly celebrate the foundation of Theta Alpha Phi, which is excellence in theater.”
