Stevens Institute of Technology Honors Our Nation’s Veterans

11/22/2010

Since 1870, Stevens Institute of Technology has honored and educated our nation’s veterans. This month, to commemorate Veteran’s Day, Stevens hosted an event in Washington, D.C. to recognize members of the military, highlight our legacy of and continued commitment to veterans, and celebrate our status as a Yellow Ribbon partner university.

Approximately 80 people attended, including military leadership, alumni veterans, student veterans, political representatives, and industry and government senior sponsors and partners. The event, hosted by Stevens in conjunction with the Honorable Michael W. Wynne, 21st Secretary of the Air Force, featured several guest speakers including Wynne, Dr. George P. Korfiatis, Provost & University Vice President of Stevens, and Dr. Don Lombardi, USMC(R) and faculty liaison to the Stevens Veterans Office (SVO). Ben Choe, USMC (R) and current student, shared his experiences and thoughts on his Stevens education.

Dr. Korfiatis opened his talk by thanking everyone for attending the event. He continued: “This is a special occasion that is all about people – it is about the people in uniform who offer do much to this country. Being able as an organization to provide them a platform where they can come and continue or start their education is an admirable thing and we are all committed.”

“Our founders were involved with the military since day one,” Dr. Korfiatis concluded. “Our association, our service and our relationship to and with the armed forces has been legendary.”

Dr. Lombardi summed up the event: “This was a wonderful opportunity for three vanguard communities – Stevens in Hoboken, Stevens in D.C. and the Washington, D.C. Veterans community – to meet and honor our nation’s heroes. There truly was a common unity that was vibrant throughout the entire event that represented a terrific start for this emerging Stevens triad partnership.”
