Stevens Institute of Technology First in NY/NJ to Offer Masters in Business Intelligence and Analytics
Hoboken, NJ – Stevens Institute of Technology has launched a new Masters degree in Business Intelligence and Analytics (BI&A) beginning in Spring 2012. The program, part of the Howe School of Technology Management, is one of the first programs of its kind in the US and the only currently offered in the NYC area. The Program is designed to meet the growing industry demand for analytics skills across diverse industries.
“According to a 2011 report from McKinsey Global Institute there will be up to 190,000 unfilled analytics positions by 2018,” said George Korfiatis, Provost and University Vice President, ”the new program will provide the educational background in data mining, data analytics and business intelligence needed to fill these roles.”
The Stevens MS, BI&A program offers the most advanced curriculum available for leveraging quantitative methods and evidence-based decision making in support of business performance. The program blends courses in databases, data warehousing, data mining, social networking, visualization, and risk modeling.
“Employers are demanding that students graduate with skills that can make a significant contribution in advancing business performance,” said Linda M. Pittenger, Associate Dean, Graduate Programs, Howe School. “Technology enables companies to have large amounts of data at a moment’s notice. These large amounts of data, known as “big data”, can reveal trends, opportunities, and risks that can be a key differentiator for companies. But some companies lack the people who can analyze that “big data” and understand what it all means. Our new BI&A program will answer these industry needs.”
The BI&A program will prepare the next generation of business analysts to be leaders in interpreting large, complex data management using a cross-disciplinary perspective. It is designed for part-time and full-time students who have undergraduate degrees in science, mathematics, computer science or engineering and are interested in pursuing careers in industry-specific analytical fields (e.g. financial, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, information technology, telecommunications, energy and engineering etc.)
Each BI&A course combines relevant theories and techniques with applied exercises to illustrate practical industry applications of data analytics. Working with an industry partner, each student will complete an industry-oriented capstone course where they apply the principles and methods they have learned to real problems using actual data in their chosen application domain.
