The Stevens Greek Community Gives Back to Hoboken
This past weekend, members of the Stevens Greek Community gathered for the first Greek Week Community Service Day in University history. More than 200 students representing every Greek organization on campus came together to help clean up and beautify five Hoboken greenspaces.
“The event was fantastic! The weather was perfect, there was participation from every house, and we had a total of 213 students come out,” said John Disimino (Civil Engineering ’12), Sigma Nu brother and president of the Interfraternity Council. “We received great feedback from the City of Hoboken for exceeding their expectations for participation. Overall, the student involvement and enthusiasm was absolutely phenomenal.”
The Community Service Day was conceived by John and Dean of Student Life, Kenneth Nilsen, who decided that having a large scale event to give back to the city would be a great way to kick off this year’s Greek Week. Dean Nilsen worked with Hoboken officials, and John rallied the support of his Greek counterparts.
Hoboken was expecting 50 to 80 students to participate and instead got 213 from the 14 different Greek organizations at Stevens. The event began with all of the students meeting on campus and being divided into five smaller groups. Each group was assigned a leader and a location. The leader brought their group to the specific parks and provided updates to John throughout the day, who in turn provided updates to City officials. Each student involved dedicated four to six hours of their Sunday to community service.
“The energy and the commitment from the Greek Community is indicative of the value added experience students get when they join a fraternity or a sorority at Stevens,” stated Dean Nilsen.
“It was such a great day, and hopefully the first of many more Greek Community Service Days,” concluded John. “All the students exhibited the Greek ideals of unity, positivity and selfless service towards the community. We came together and got the job done – and we had fun doing it!”
