Stevens alumnus, Robert G. Keane, honored with Harold E. Saunders Award from the American Society of Naval Engineers

HOBOKEN, N.J. - Stevens Institute of Technology alumnus Robert G. Keane, who holds a Master of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering, was recently honored with the Captain Harold E. Saunders Award from the American Society of Naval Engineers.

The Harold E. Saunders Award, presented annually since 1977, honors an individual whose reputation in naval engineering spans a long career of notable achievement and influence. Captain Saunders' contributions to the arts and sciences of naval engineering spanned nearly fifty years, culminating in the publication of his monumental work, Hydrodynamics in Ship Design. Naval architect, engineer, constructor, scientist, writer, scholar, administrator, diplomat – Captain Saunders was all of these. He set a standard of professionalism and dedication for all naval engineers.

Recipients have demonstrated productivity, growth, and outstanding accomplishment in engineering over the years, with ultimate wide recognition by peers as a leader in the field, and of such prestige as to merit the acclaim of the naval engineering community.

Keane has more than 45 years of naval ship design experience, 35 years of which were in technical leadership positions at the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). During 21 years as a member of the Federal Senior Executive Service, he served in senior leadership positions as the US Navy’s chief naval architect, chief of Ship Design, director of Ship Survivability, director of Total Ship Systems at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division, and technical authority for Total Ship System Engineering.

In his last position at NAVSEA before retiring in 2002, he was the executive director for Surface Ship Design and Systems Engineering. In this position, he was responsible for the design of all Navy surface ships and craft from pre-acquisition concept design studies, through the analysis of alternatives, preliminary and contract design, detail design and construction, and in-service support. His NAVSEA-led ship design teams completed more than 35 major contract designs, which resulted in the acquisition of about 200 naval ships. Also, as director of Hull Form Design, Stability and Hydrodynamics, he directed the hull form design for 15 ship programs. He now heads his own consulting firm, Ship Design USA, Inc., and supports the US Navy’s Center for Innovation in Ship Design (CISD) and the DoD High Performance Computing Computational Research & Engineering for Acquisition Tools & Environments (CREATE) Program.

Keane was born in Baltimore, Maryland, near the shipyard where his father worked for 43 years. He graduated from the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and received a B.E.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 1962. He received a Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1967, specializing in ship hydrodynamics, and a M.S.E. in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of Michigan. He is a Life Fellow of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) and a Life member of the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE), as well as Chair of the SNAME-ASNE Joint Ship Design Committee. He is well published and has received numerous honorary awards, including the SNAME Admiral David Taylor Medal and two Elmer Hann Best Paper Awards, the Secretary of the Navy Distinguished Civilian Service Award, Department of Navy Superior and Meritorious Civilian Service Awards, and the Association of Scientists and Engineers of NAVSEA Professional Achievement, Silver Medal and John Neidermair Best Paper Awards.

Keane is married to the former Judith Imwold of Parkville, Maryland. They have three sons and four grandchildren.
