Stevens’ School of Systems & Enterprises Article Wins 2010 “Best of Visions” Award

Dr. Robert Cloutier and Portia Crowe Honored at Recent PDMA Conference

10/27/2010

Hoboken, NJ – An article written by Portia Crowe, Ph.D. candidate, and Dr. Robert Cloutier of the School of Systems & Enterprises at Stevens Institute of Technology describing a significant upgrade to a major U.S. Department of Defense readiness reporting system has won the “Best of Visions” award for 2010 from the Product Development & Management Association (PDMA), publisher of Visions magazine.

The article provides a guide for organizations to streamline product development using an agile approach in a setting where circumstances and needs are consistently changing. A copy of the article, “The U.S. Army updates its readiness reporting system using an ‘Agile’ approach in a challenging environment”, may be found at http://www.visions-digital.com/visions/200910/#pg13 (October 2009 issue, page 13).
“Stevens Institute of Technology has a long history of collaborating with the US Army. This research is significant in showing that agile approaches pioneered in software engineering are extendable and have broader  importance to the practice of systems engineering as a whole,” explained Dr. Cloutier, Associate Professor, School of Systems and Enterprises.

"The quality academic research that I have been able to accomplish at Stevens has provided me with the tools and knowledge to enable advancement and innovation in many programs in the US Army,” Crowe, US Army Strategic Battle Command technical director and chief engineer of the Army Defense Readiness and Projection Systems, said. “Specifically, the case study describes the Agile process used in rapid fielding of Warfighter capabilities allowing for great benefit to the Army. This model was repeated in a complimentary system reusing the same methods and process for the Unites States Marine Corps."

Crowe and Cloutier’s in-depth piece was selected from a wide array of articles authored by new product development experts from around the globe and published by Visions in 2009. The award was presented this month at the 34th Annual Global Conference on Product Innovation Management in Orlando, Florida.
