Regan Qualifies for NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

5/20/2013

Freshman Amy Regan of the Stevens women’s outdoor track & field team qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 5,000-meter run which will take place from May 23-25 in La Crosse, Wis. Regan heads into the championships with the 13th best time in the 5K with a time of 17:03.41.

Regan is one of 22 competitors that will run in the 5K and is just one of three freshmen to qualify. She sits just six seconds behind in seeding from the top eight runners in the event.

The freshman has put together one of the most successful cross country/track & field seasons in Stevens history. She was the first NCAA qualifier in school history for cross country and placed 40th overall in a school record time of 22:07 on the 6K course. Regan also won the Empire 8 Conference individual title and earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors in the fall.

During the indoor track & field season, Regan set program records in the mile, 3,000-meter run and 5K. She claimed two Empire 8 crowns in the mile and distance medley relay race and went on to place second at ECACs in the 5K. Her time of 17:23 shattered the school mark by 27 seconds and ranked within the top 30 nationally.

So far this spring, she has twice set school standards in the 1,500-meter run (4:53 and 4:51) and 5K (17:38 and 17:03). Her time of 17:03 is the second fastest time amongst freshmen in Division III.

“Amy has accomplished so much over her nine months as a Stevens student-athlete. Her commitment, hard work and overall desire to meet her potential is something that cannot be taught or coached. She has helped, along with all these other Stevens student-athletes, to put the program on the map as competitive program at the conference, regional and national levels.” said head coach Justin Wood.

Wood continued to say, “I am excited to see what Amy can do in this 5,000-meter race at NCAAs. Her training and performances have shown progressive improvement and I expect to see that translate directly to her performance this weekend.”
