Northern Light Joins the Center for Complex Systems and Enterprises as a Charter Member
Research Center Secures Leading-Edge Analytics and Information Resources through Charter Member
Hoboken, N.J. – Stevens Institute of Technology announces the launch of the Center for Complex Systems and Enterprises (CCSE), an interdisciplinary initiative designed to foster research and education in systems science and engineering and to create innovative solutions to manage complexity. The CSSE confirms the addition of Northern Light as a second charter member; Lockheed Martin joined as the first charter member.
Northern Light provides strategic research portals, business research content, and search technology to global enterprises. Headquartered in Boston, Mass., Northern Light’s current clients include Fortune 100 market leaders in information technology, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, energy, financial services, insurance, transportation, retailing and electronics. The company will provide the CCSE with a customized research portal that includes high-end software tools and a wide range of rich data sets that will support the center’s data and text analytics research.
“The leading-edge analytics and information tools provided by Northern Light will enable the CCSE to immediately establish and accelerate a significant portfolio of research initiatives that will address and contribute solutions to complex issues in the four domains of healthcare delivery, financial systems, sustainable energy and national security,” said Dr. William B. Rouse, the Alexander Crombie Humphreys Chair of Economics in Engineering at Stevens and the inaugural director of the CCSE.
The CCSE will focus its research on four key domains – healthcare delivery, financial systems, sustainable energy and national security. The large-scale, public-private enterprise systems associated with these domains are characterized by wide ranging and splintered groups of corporate and government stakeholders, often with conflicting interests and objectives, which present major hurdles to performance improvement, productivity increase and system transformation.

The primary activity of the CCSE will be the development of mathematical and computational models of complex enterprises to guide the decision making of business leaders and policymakers in these four domains. These “policy flight simulators” will enable leaders to rapidly evaluate how potential organizational decisions will impact stakeholders, eliminate bad ideas, understand alternatives and translate data into effective strategies and policies.
The CCSE has already developed a unique multi-level enterprise modeling framework which it hopes becomes the preferred means for addressing transformation issues in complex systems and enterprises. It has already been tested in healthcare, security and energy. The modeling paradigm enables the replication of any complex enterprise, and along with associated interactive visualizations, it allows for the exploration of issues and solutions at any level of a system.
