New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame Recognizes Stevens Institute of Technology Faculty, Graduates and Students

Hoboken, NJ – Four members of the Stevens Institute of Technology community will be honored by the New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame (NJIHoF) during the organization’s upcoming awards banquet on October 14, 2010. One honoree, a graduate from the Howe School of Technology Management, is being recognized with one of this year’s “Inventor of the Year” awards.

The annual NJIHoF event will recognize 16 individuals for their ideas and creativity that have led to significant breakthroughs in diverse areas of research and entrepreneurship, including the four representatives from Stevens:

Dr. Nicolas Girard (M.S. Howe School of Technology Management, 2002)
Dr. Vikki Hazelwood (Stevens Institute of Technology, Professor and Associate Program Director of Biomedical Engineering)
Dr. Xiaoling Chen (Ph.D., Electrical Engineering, Stevens Institute of Technology, 2010)
Dr. Asli Ergun (Ph.D. candidate, Chemical Engineering, Stevens Institute of Technology)

“The winners embody the innovative spirit that guides the Stevens Institute of Technology community and we are extremely proud of their significant contributions to their respective fields of work,” said Christos Christodoulatos, Associate Provost of Academic Entrepreneurship at Stevens.  “As our faculty and students continue their focus on implementing real-world solutions with their research and studies, they can look toward the paths of the New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame winners for guidance and inspiration.” 

Dr. Girard is receiving the Inventor of the Year Award for his groundbreaking work as founder and chief technology officer at Attila Technologies, where he advanced wireless broadband communications by developing a technology to increase bandwidth by simultaneously accessing multiple networks.  Individuals selected as Inventor of the Year must have a patented invention that has been successfully commercialized.  

Dr. Hazelwood will be recognized as the sole recipient of the Advancement of Invention Award for her contributions to the field of science by creating a lab for translational research in medicine. Many of her research team’s projects are focused on developing technologies to more accurately diagnose injury or disease, and improve outcomes.

In addition, two of Stevens’ graduate students will receive the Graduate Student Award, given to a maximum of six recipients per year for their participation in groundbreaking research, invention process and thesis work.  Dr. Xiaoling Chen, a graduate fellow in Stevens’ Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, is being honored for the development of RAIDDS: Rapid Deception Detection Suite, a software program that identifies internet deception using a combination of cognitive psychology, information theory and advanced data mining.  Dr. Asli Ergun, an Innovation & Entrepreneurship Doctoral Fellow at Stevens, will also be honored for her patented invention of a cage and core device, which can be used as a bone graft substitute.

The New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame honors inventors, organizations, and others who have contributed to innovation in the Invention State and promotes the role of invention in the state’s development and the role of inventors in improving society and changing our lives.  Now in its third decade, the New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame operated from 1987 to 2002 at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, from 2003 to 2007 with support from the Research & Development Council of New Jersey, and thereafter under the aegis of Stevens Institute of Technology Office of Academic Entrepreneurship.
