Four CAL Faculty Members to present at the 44th Annual Conference of the College English Association

4/2/2013

Four faculty members will be presenting at the College English Association's 44th Annual Conference in Savannah, GA, this weekend. Professors Robin Hammerman, Jennifer McBryan, M. Robin Whitney, and Billy Middleton are all members of the Stevens Freshman Experience, the required curriculum for all first-year students at Stevens.

Their panel discussion, "First-Year Writing and Adaptation: Understanding the Tech University Habitat", will address concerns raised about the future of research writing in first-year composition courses. As a panel, they aim to address these concerns by integrating critical information literacy skills into the habitat of the composition classroom. In particular, the faculty has found that technical students thrive on structure and scaffolded learning opportunities that invite them to develop strong analytical skills within an interdisciplinary environment. They believe that this kind of curriculum encourages students to recognize the intersections of the humanities with their technical and scientific programs of study, thus empowering students to become full campus citizens.

As a group, the Freshman Experience faculty brings years of expertise in academic, technical, and professional writing to the Writing and Communications classrooms in order to help prepare the Stevens student for the writing they will do throughout their college careers and beyond.
