Dr. Victor Lawrence of Stevens Institute of Technology is Named Charter Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors
Hoboken, N.J. – Dr. Victor Lawrence of Stevens Institute of Technology has been named a Charter Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). Lawrence is renowned for his pioneering work in global telecommunications which have paved the way for many developments in broadband, DSL, HDTV technologies and wireless data transfer and helped to spur the growth of the Internet worldwide.
Election to NAI Fellow status is a high professional distinction accorded to academic inventors who have demonstrated a highly prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society. The 98 innovators elected to NAI Fellow status represent 54 universities and non-profit research institutes. Together, they hold more than 3,200 U.S. patents.
Lawrence is Associate Dean and Batchelor Chair Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department of the Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering and Science at Stevens. Prior to joining Stevens, he had a 30 year career at Bell Laboratories, where he held a variety of management positions, including Vice President of Advanced Communications Technology, and contributed to cutting-edge and impactful research and development in signal processing and communications. His signal processing to data communication to led to many significant advances in high-speed transmission over the public switched telephone networks (PSTN). In addition, his advancements in V-series modern technology and international standards enabled the interoperability of computer networks across the globe.
At Stevens, Lawrence is the founding director of the Center for Intelligent Networked Systems (iNETs), focused on the systematic embedding of intelligence through networked systems to achieve capabilities extending well beyond the primarily end-to-end data delivery services of today's networks.
Lawrence holds several honors, including Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and membership in the National Academy of Engineering, and numerous patents in the telecommunications field. He has been involved in several entrepreneurial technology ventures and spin-offs, including Globespan, Lucent Digital Video and Lucent Digital Radio.
A champion of the effort to bring fiber optic connectivity to Africa and to improve the communications infrastructure of the world’s poorest countries, Lawrence has advised the President of South Africa on development of national broadband network and served on the board of directors of Telkom, Africa’s largest integrated communications company. He also founded Baharicom Development Corporation, which is building a high-capacity, broadband underwater cable along the west coast of Africa.
Included in the 2012 NAI Fellow Charter class are eight Nobel Laureates, two Fellows of the Royal Society, 12 presidents of research universities and non-profit research institutes, 50 members of the National Academies (National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine), 11 inductees of the National Inventors Hall of Fame, 3 recipients of the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, four recipients of the National Medal of Science, and 29 AAAS Fellows, among other awards and distinctions.
Lawrence and the other 2012 NAI Charter Fellows will be inducted as Fellows by the U.S. Commissioner for Patents Margaret A. Focarino of the United States Patent and Trademark Office during the 2nd Annual Conference of the National Academy of Inventors, on Feb. 22, 2013, in Tampa, Fla., at the Embassy Suites Hotel in the University of South Florida Research Park. Fellows will be presented with a special trophy and a rosette pin.
The NAI Charter Fellows will also be recognized in a full page advertisement in The Chronicle of Higher Education on Jan. 18, 2013, in the Jan. 2013 issue of Inventors Digest, and in a future issue of Technology and Innovation – Proceedings of the National Academy of Inventors.
Academic inventors and innovators elected to the rank of NAI Charter Fellow were nominated by their peers for outstanding contributions to innovation in areas such as patents and licensing, innovative discovery and technology, significant impact on society, and support and enhancement of innovation.
The NAI Fellows Selection Committee is comprised of 14 Members from the National Academies, recipients of National Medals, a National Inventors Hall of Fame inductee, and senior officials from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM), the United Inventors Association and University Research Leadership.
