Delta Phi Epsilon Draws on Stevens’ Love for Food for Philanthropic Cause

Through its recent sold-out Castle Point Cravings event, Stevens’ Epsilon Gamma Chapter of Delta Phi Epsilon sorority raised more than $1,000 to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation – and identified Hoboken’s best restaurants to benefit the entire Stevens community.

Castle Point Cravings, which took place on campus on Nov. 10, set prominent Hoboken restaurants against each other in a food-tasting competition. Two hundred students, faculty and Delta Phi Epsilon alumni turned out to sample dishes and vote on their favorites in different categories.

“We are continually working on furthering our philanthropic activities and we were thrilled with the support of our fellow students and the Hoboken business community,” said senior Irene Rahman, Co-Philanthropy Chair (with junior Melissa Foy) of Delta Phi Epsilon.

Working with Stevens’ radio station WCPR, which co-sponsored and served as deejay for the event, the 59 members of Delta Phi Epsilon attracted 15 restaurants to participate in Castle Point Cravings: Balbo's Pizzeria, Napoli's Brick Oven Pizza, Benny Tudino's, H&S Giovanni's, Fran's Italian Deli, Cafe Michelina, D's Soul Full Cafe, Mr. Wraps, Rejuice A Nation, Crumbs, Hoboken Gourmet Company, Ben & Jerry's, Applegate Farm, Hummus Bar and Maoz.

Standing in front of brightly-logoed banners created by the sorority sisters, representatives from each restaurant donated samples of their best dishes and described their menus to the hungry audience in attendance. After voting, nine prizes were given out, and the winners received plaques to commemorate and promote their victory for current and future customers.

Castle Point Cravings represents just one of many philanthropic initiatives led by Stevens’ Greek organizations throughout the academic year. Delta Phi Epsilon, for example, contributed approximately $2,500 to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders last year by hosting its 14th annual Castle Point King fundraiser, a male beauty pageant.

“A major part of our mission is to develop a social consciousness and a commitment to think and act for the greater good,” said Rahman. “We are so proud to have such amazing, hard-working, and dedicated women and call them our sisters.”
