Center for Secure and Resilient Maritime Commerce to host inaugural Summer Research Institute
Eight-week research program will tackle critical issues in maritime domain awareness, emergency response, and maritime system resilience
HOBOKEN, N.J. - The National Center for Secure and Resilient Maritime Commerce (CSR) will offer its inaugural Summer Research Institute, June 7 – July 30, 2010, on the campus of Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J. The Summer Research Institute will provide qualified undergraduate and graduate students from CSR partner schools, including Stevens Institute of Technology, University of Miami, Rutgers University, Monmouth University, and University of Puerto Rico a unique opportunity to participate in an intensive eight-week research program designed to tackle critical issues in maritime domain awareness, emergency response, and maritime system resilience to enhance our nation’s maritime security. Students from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and Morgan State University will also be participating.
Students will learn first-hand from CSR researchers and partner school faculty, including: Dr. Michael Bruno, Director, CSR and Dean, The Charles V. Schaefer, School of Engineering and Science, Dr. Scott Glenn, Professor, Physical Oceanography, Rutgers University Ocean Observation Laboratory, Dr. Hans Graber, Executive Director, The Center for Southeastern Tropical Advanced Remote Sensing (CSTARS) at the University of Miami, Dr. Barbara Reagor, Director, Rapid Response Institute, Monmouth University, Dr. Jorge Corredor, Professor, Marine Sciences, University or Puerto Rico in Mayaguez, and James Rice, Deputy Director, MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics, to name a few.
Twenty-six students from a broad range of academic majors have been selected to participate in the intensive summer research program.
This highly-collaborative, hands-on summer research program will emphasize critical thinking and multi-disciplinary research to generate innovative ideas and solutions to address complex maritime security issues.
“The CSR Summer Institute will be a truly unique enterprise, building on our overarching approach of Education informed by Research, and taking this approach one step further. CSR researchers and students from a dozen different disciplines and 8 different universities will work together and learn together and - by the end of the summer - solve problems together. We have great expectations, and with the talent we've assembled, I know that we won't be disappointed,” said Dr. Michael Bruno, Director, CSR and Dean, Charles V. Schaefer School of Engineering and Science.
Summer program overview:
- Students will engage in thought provoking seminars and lectures by CSR researchers, maritime industry and government experts.
- Participate in collaborative multi-disciplinary, hands-on research, through modeling and simulation projects, data collection, and real-time analysis.
- Engage in field visits to ports, laboratories, and industry and government sites.
- Work as part of a motivated team to prepare final reports and present research findings, and conclusions to CSR researchers and DHS officials.
- Selected team projects will be featured at DHS conferences and meetings.
Students will focus on research issues related to Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA), Transportation Systems Design for Resilience, and Cognitive Ports.
Students admitted into the program will participate in real-world research and analysis, and will receive competitive summer research stipends up to $5,000 and free on-campus accommodations.
Following this year’s inaugural offering at Stevens Institute of Technology, the Summer Research Institute will rotate locations among its CSR partner schools.
“This type of advanced summer research opportunity provides an invaluable experience for students to have the chance to work with the latest generation of sensor data, models and instrumentation, in addressing complex security issues,” said Dr. Hans Graber, whose CSTARS will provide remotely sensed satellite images for students to use in projects throughout the summer program. “Working with noted scientists from the partner universities, these students will become actively engaged in learning the complexities of the maritime environment and how crucial it is for the nation’s livelihood.”
