The Mathematics Immersion Program (MIP) is a three-week summer residential program conducted each summer at Stevens Institute of Technology, and traditionally runs from the third Sunday in July. MIP is open to undergraduates who are current participants in an EOF program at any New Jersey two year or four year college or university. MIP is sponsored by the State of New Jersey, Commission on Higher Education, Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) Program and operates out of the office of the Stevens Technical Enrichment Program (STEP) at Stevens Institute of Technology. MIP was instituted in 1987 and since that time it has served over 300 students from at least 35 New Jersey colleges and universities.
The Mathematics Immersion Program (MIP) has three primary goals:
- to encourage students to pursue more advanced courses in mathematics,
- to help students gain more confidence in their ability to succeed in technology majors and
- to help students become more proficient in using computers as a learning tool.
The MIP three-week summer residential program includes the following features:
- Academic instruction from outstanding faculty from local colleges
- Personalized attention from faculty, staff and tutors
- A tailored program of mathematics instruction emphasizing concepts and their application to issues in engineering and science
- Preparation for calculus and other higher-level math courses
- A career project in which students explore how they will use mathematics and may be used in their major and/or proposed career
- Computer classes to enhance their proficiency and introduce them to new applications and software programs
- Review of statistical methods and testing procedures useful for business and social science majors
- Training in technical research and technical presentation
