The team designed their preliminary design by the end of the Fall 2003 semester.  The device contains a threaded (M1.5 X 3 Isometric threads) rod with nut that allows movement of the upper transport plate.  The device has angular adjustment capabilities due to a set of connecting wedges (that are placed between the two lower transport plates and through the threaded rod).

The device has multi-tooth and single-tooth capabilities.  Each turn of the nut corresponds to a .5mm distraction.  A patient generally would turn the nut (with or without aid by a dental practitioner) two times per day to achieve the 1mm prescribed distraction.
