accessing online library resources from off-campus
spacer

As of June 2009, the library is using a new off-campus authentication method called EZ-Proxy.  To access the library databases from off-campus, you will no longer need to connect to the Stevens network through a VPN connection.  You will be prompted for your Pipeline username and password when you first go to a library database.

You will be prompted for your Pipeline username and password only one time per browser session.   If you don't know your Pipeline username, you can look it up at the pipeline username lookup page.  If you have forgotten your Pipeline password you can request a password reset.

For a demonstration of how easy the EZ-proxy system is, please watch the off-campus library access video.

VPN connection is no longer needed

You can still use a VPN connection to connect to the Stevens network and the library databases, but this is no longer necessary.  Instructions to assist you with accessing online resources from off campus via a VPN can be found at the Library Databases Information Technology Itwiki page

You can also view a short video tutorial about setting up a VPN connection for off-campus library use.

The instructions will help you set up a virtual private network (VPN). By using the VPN your remote network connection will appear to be from a Stevens network address. Your computer must appear to have a Stevens network address to access proprietary, commercial databases and resources that are available to the Stevens community. Operating systems covered in these instructions are: Windows Vista, XP and 2000, Mac OS X and Linux.

Username clarification

Your Campus Domain and Pipeline usernames are the same.  Your Campus Domain password is not the same as your Pipeline password.  EZ-Proxy will use your Pipeline username and password to login.  All staff, faculty and students have a Pipeline account.   You must have a Windows Campus Domain login to use the VPN server.  All staff, faculty, and undergraduate students have a Windows Campus Domain Account automatically created.  Graduate students must request that an account be created.  Please refer to the Campus Domain Account page for instruction in how to automatically request an account.

After you have configured the VPN, you will need to log in using your Campus Domain username and password. Keep in mind that you will need to connect through the VPN each time you want to access online resources, so you may want to create a shortcut on your desktop.

If you have reviewed all of the IT instructions and have problems connecting to the library databases, please notify an Information Technology consultant at (201)-216-5500 or helpdesk@stevens.edu.
