ISSUANCE OF SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS

International students will not automatically receive Social Security Numbers. To obtain a Social Security Number, you must be employed, either on-campus or off-campus. To obtain the Social Security Number you must:

  1. Obtain a letter from your department or employer stating that you will be employed. The letter must be an original document on department or company letterhead.
  2. Bring the letter to the ISSS office for endorsement.
  3. Take the letter to the local Social Security Office in Hoboken on 79th and Hudson Street, Hoboken. Located on the sixth floor, with your original passport, and immigration documents (I-94, I-20, DS-2019).
  4. Complete the Social Security Number application form and submit it.
  5. Request a letter from the Social Security Office stating that your application for a Social Security Number will be processed.
Processing time for the number is generally at least two weeks and can be longer if the Social Security Administration encounters any delays in confirming your immigration status.

For tax identification purposes ONLY, for students not employed, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will issue a number that resembles the Social Security Number. To obtain this tax ID number, you must file a form W-7. Forms are available at ISSS. If you have any questions, please consult the International Student and Scholar Services Office at 201-216-5189.
