1. One of the first things you need to do after your arrival is to report to International Student and Scholar Services located on the 5th Floor of the Howe Center Building.When you come, please bring your passport, I-94 card, SEVIS Fee receipt and any other immigration forms so that copies can be made. Please note: You do not have to report immediately after your arrival in the U.S. (i.e. directly from the airport), rather after you have settled in to your temporary or permanent housing arrangements.
2. You will want to make housing arrangements as soon as possible, as it can be difficult to find an apartment in Hoboken. Once you find a place to live, you will be much more relaxed and ready to focus on academic priorities.
3. Prior to registration you will need to open a bank account. Most students bring bank drafts or checks made payable to Stevens which they use to pay their tuition and living expenses. You can estimate the amount you’ll need for one semester (4 months) by looking at the I-20 form. An alternative is to bring the money in checks/traveler’s checks in your name, which can be deposited into your own personal bank account after arrival. If you choose to do this, you may have to wait for one or two weeks before you can withdraw any money. Consider your choices carefully when deciding how to bring your money.
4. Attend the Orientation Program, this is extremely important because a lot of information is provided to students during this time. Required English placement testing takes place at this time, also.
5. Begin steps to register for classes. The specific details will be covered during the Orientation Program.
6. If you arrive prior to the scheduled orientation, you may want to meet with your department to get acquainted with the courses that are being offered and the professors who will be teaching them.
7. Enroll for classes after receiving English test results.
