NEW THINKING FOR TODAY'S LEADERS
Crisis Leadership: Preventing, Containing, Restoring - Concluded
The next Howe School Alliance Roundtable meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 16, 2011. The meeting will conclude our discussion of Crisis Leadership that began at the October, 2010 meeting. You will benefit from this meeting whether or not you attended the October meeting. A crisis is an event that threatens, or has the potential to threaten, the organization. Crisis leadership is not crisis management, the reaction (in large part, public relations) to an unfortunate event. Rather, it is the continuously proactive approach to anticipating and preventing such problems, and, should they nevertheless occur, containing their impact and restoring the organization as quickly as possible to full operation. At the October, 2010 meeting we dealt with
- the different categories of crises
- organizational "defense mechanisms" that hinder crisis leadership
- "normal accidents" and why should they be very worrisome
- "weak signals" and why it is crucial to notice them and connect the dots
After a brief summary of the key points of the October discussion, the February 16 meeting, under the facilitation of HSATM Senior Associate Anthony Le Storti, will delve into how not to be surprised by "predictable surprises" - events that take people by surprise despite prior awareness of all the information necessary to anticipate the events and their consequences. We will learn the lessons to be taken from the characteristics and methods of High Reliability Organizations, and conclude with a summary discussion of the critical characteristics of crisis leadership for the 21st century. The meeting is being hosted by Infineum at their Linden, NJ facility, 1900 E. Linden Avenue, Linden, NJ. Directions are attached. Dress code is business casual. A networking lunch will be available from 11:30-12:30. The Roundtable session will be held from 12:30 - 4:00 PM. Based on the discussion at the November Advisory Board meeting, there will be the opportunity to continue to 4:30 for participants who would like to continue the discussion. Please respond if you plan to attend ( firstname.lastname@example.org or 212-794-3637).
