FAQ’S (Frequently Asked Questions)
When will students find out about their housing assignments?
Housing assignments for new students will be mailed to home addresses by the
end of July. The mailing will include the name and address of the roommate
along with arrival information. Upperclassmen who go through room selection
receive their room assignment and roommates name during the spring semester.
All other students will receive their assignment and roommate during the summer.
What do students do if they need to arrive before the scheduled check-in
date?
Send your request via email to
reslife@stevens.edu. There will
be a fee charged for early arrival. Please include your name, room number,
student ID number, the reason you need to arrive early, and a telephone number
or e-mail address where you can be reached.
How long are the beds? What kind of sheets will I need?
All the beds in the residence halls are twin beds and are 80 inches long.
You will need extra long (80") twin bed sheets, which are available at retail
stores or through the Residence Life sponsored linen program. You will receive
information at your home address regarding the available linen packages. You can

What does a student do if he or she doesn’t like the room assignment?
We regret that we are unable to accept requests for room changes once
assignments are mailed out. The room change process begins after the second week
of the semester. During the room change process students can contact the Area
Coordinators (ACs) for paperwork and to see what spaces are available to move
to. RAs and ACs are available to do mediation in the event of a roommate
conflict.
Are pets allowed?
No. Pets are not permitted in the residence halls with exception of fish.
Are lofts allowed?
Yes. Lofts must be freestanding and be at least 2 feet below the
sprinkler head. (no taller than 5 feet). If the loft, or any other non-Institute
issued furniture is obstructive or interferes with the roommates equitable
access to the room, it will have to be removed.
Can furniture be removed from the room and replaced with my own?
No, the furniture provided is permanent and may not be removed from the
rooms.
How often are rooms cleaned?
Students are responsible for cleaning their own rooms. Custodians are
responsible for cleaning the public areas (hallways, common area kitchens, etc.)
public restrooms and community bathrooms. Students with bathroom facilities in
their individual rooms are responsible for cleaning their own bathrooms
What does a student do if he or she has roommate problems?
We encourage students to contact their Resident Assistant (RA) or the Area
Coordinator for their respective building who will attempt to mediate and
resolve any roommate problems.
Can students leave belongings in the room during break periods?
Yes, students may leave belongings for the winter and spring breaks. While
student rooms are typically accessed for maintenance purposes only, we do
encourage students to take valuables home with them since Stevens does not
assume any responsibility for missing items.
Should students get insurance for belongings brought to campus?
Yes. We suggest that you check with your parents home owner
insurance carrier to make sure you have protection against loss or damage.
Stevens Institute of Technology is not liable for loss of or damage to personal
belongings.

What happens if my student’s belongings are damaged or stolen while in
the residence halls?
Stevens is not responsible for your student’s belongings. You should check
with your insurance company about coverage.
Are there storage facilities available on campus?
No. Stevens does not have storage facilities. There is a storage facility
in Hoboken that rents bins. We also have a list of storage places that can be
made available upon request.
Is cable TV service available in the rooms?
Yes. All campus rooms are supplied with basic cable service at no extra
charge. Please note that you must supply your own coaxial cable.
Are computer network ports available in each room?
Yes. All of the campus residence halls are wired with a 100 Base-T (max
transfer rate of 10 MBps) hardwire port to the Stevens computing network as well
as the Internet. Any further questions can be answered by the Information
Technology Help Desk at (201) 216-5500.
Where can students do their laundry?
Each campus residence hall has a laundry room with washers and dryers. The
cost is $1.25 for a wash cycle and $1.25 for a dryer cycle. Payment for each
cycle is made with Duck Bills on the student ID card.
Are students allowed to have a refrigerator and microwave in the room?
Yes, however only one per room is permitted. The microwave cannot exceed 700
watts and the compact refrigerator 6 amps/ 4.4 cubic feet.
Are the halls locked?
All residence hall exterior doors are locked 24 hours a day, seven days a
week. The only students who have access to the building are those students who
live in the building.
Are there staff who live in the residence halls?
Yes. Each floor/wing has a Resident Assistant (RA) who lives on the floor. An
RA is a trained upper-class student advisor and role model. He or she helps
students adapt to their living environment and assists students in managing
decisions. The RAs are supervised by Area Coordinators who also live in
the halls and are accessible and available through the Office of Residence Life.
How does the meal plan work?
The meal plan and Duck Bills work like a debit account; when you go to eat a
meal or make a purchase, the meal, or amount is deducted from the total
available for the semester.
What are Duck Bills?
Duck Bills are a cash equivalent that can be utilized at any of our food or
laundry service locations, Campus Bookstore or at select off-campus locations.
Duck Bills are valued at one Duck Bill = one dollar and can be viewed and/or
replenished at any time by going to
www.duckbills.com
Can money be added to my Duck Bill account?
Yes. You can either visit the Office of Residence Life or e-mail
reslife@stevens.edu where th charge will be billed to your student
account, or go to our online site;
www.duckbills.com to use a debit/credit card.
Is the meal plan available during breaks
such as Thanksgiving, Winter Break, Spring Break, etc.?
Limited service is usually available in Colonel John’s where students can
utilize their Duck Bills. There is no food service the week between
Christmas and New Year’s Day. Students may also use their Duck Bills at limited
off campus restaurants. A complete list of off campus vendors can be found at

What do I do if there's something broken in my room?

How do I get back into my room if I am locked out and do
not have my key?
If you get locked out of your room outside of office hours you
can go to the RA Office for your Area between 7pm and 11pm. Otherwise you
can call the center desk (201) 216-5105 for assistance.
What kind of security is there for the residence halls?
Two RAs are on duty per area every evening from 5pm. Off
Campus RCs are on duty daily Either can be reached via the center desk
(201) 216-5105.
Can I have an overnight guest?
Students are allowed to have overnight guest provided they complete the
overnight guest form.
